The Limerick Walking Association aims to encourage people to take up walking for fitness and health. We believe that the social aspect is also important, so we organise several social activities throughout the year.
The association was formed in 1992, making us the oldest walking group in Ireland. The first walk was held at the Country Club on Cratloe road in late September 1991, and over the years we have grown to an association of about 200 members. The late Jim Kenny TD was our first President and Paul O’Connor our first Chairman.
Now we have regular walks three days a week. The walks are suitable for anybody and everybody, of any age or fitness level. After the walks we always get together for refreshments and a chat. Every Saturday after the walks we meet at the Na Piarsaigh GAA Club where members can socialize, enjoy a hot drink, win prizes in the raffle, sign up for new events, and hear the latest club news.
Once a month or so the club makes a feature of visiting a interesting local spot for a walk, followed by a meal. Members are given a choice of three different length guided walks. A brilliant pub meal follows this, all at a knock down price. This follows in the tradition of our being a very sociable club.
And to encourage the social aspect even more we hold an annual overseas walking holiday, long weekend walking breaks in Irish beauty spots, dinner dances, charity walks and theatre shows.
